Is your cabinet “check engine” light on?
Lots of items we use every day have warning systems that let us know something isn’t right. A car has warning lights that illuminate on the dashboard and a computer has virus scanners. If you decide to ignore one of these warnings, it could cost you hundreds of dollars, possibly thousands if you procrastinated long enough.
Hint: The hardware for your cabinets is no different and it pays to understand what the signs may be.
Signs that you need to schedule a service call:
A door has black powder residue on the inside of the door near the hinge.
A door is misaligned and no longer straight.
A door wiggles up or down when you use it.
A creaking noise when you open or close your door.
A visual scratch along the side of your drawer.
A drawer stops gliding smoothly whether you are opening or closing.
A drawer bounces back open by itself.
A drawer front starts falling apart.
Your have to use your head to keep your lift up door open ;)
It’s easy to ignore these subtle signs because you can often use the cabinet and work around the annoyance. The risk in ignoring these signs is the cost to replace a broken door or drawer front which can be several hundred dollars for one door. If it’s important to you to have a uniform kitchen, you may find that your only option is to replace all of your cabinets if existing ones cannot be matched anymore. It’s no secret that a kitchen renovation would cost thousands of dollars for new cabinets!
Now that you understand some of the warning signs your hardware may be giving you, we encourage you to take a few minutes and review your kitchen. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple service call to maintain what you have.
